Mixcraft is also less buggy than Powertracks and has great graphic automation lanes for just about every parameter (something I have wished for in Powertracks since 2005)īut Powertracks has superior midi editing and I have a great fondness for the program as I started with it 20 years ago and have written lots of music on it. The general midi instruments there at least sound better than CoyoteWT and Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth - and they have zero lag. On my win10 PC I have instead been using Acoustica Mixcraft more and more. I use CoolSoft VirtualMidiSynth to listen to midi files in media players but the lag makes it useless when working inside a DAW. I love the simplicity of being able to use GM soundfonts on my old machine, but still haven’t been able to figure out a way of doing this on a machine without a Sound Blaster card. I do, however, use my 2010 version which I have on an old win xp machine with a Sound Blaster x-fi card. I have version 2019 on my win10 pc but hardly ever use it. I do not know what "bandstand" is, but I'm willing to bet it isn't any better than the Soundfonts above.I’m pondering about updating to version 2021 or not. Hope this answers many of your questions. To access Soundfonts in Logic Express without changing the default Quicktime Instruments, choose Apple DLS Services in the Channel Strip, then the preferred bank in the pop-up window.Īlso search this forum for more info about using Soundfonts in Logic.

Some include the Roland GS additions.ĭo a Google search to find my favorite GM Soundfonts:įluidR3 GM.SF2 141mb - has GS additions available A SoundFont file, not a plug-in, will play any of the 128 GM instruments on any of 16 channels and understands all MIDI controllers, pedals, Program Changes, ReVerb, Chorus, Delay, etc. Generally the larger the GM Soundfont file, the higher the quality. You must put these sf2 files in /Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks, and then select your choice in QuickTime System Preferences. You can, however, substitute a much better GM Soundfont file, many of which are free from Soundfont sites on the web and can be accessed from QuickTime Player or Logic Express.

The default Quicktime Musical Instrument is a Roland GM file of about 2mb and as such is mediocre.
